Where to Live in Praia: A Guide to the Main Neighbourhoods

Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, brings together neighbourhoods with very different identities. Where to live depends on what you're after: modernity and proximity to the sea, a central location with shops, or family-friendly quiet. This guide sums up the main areas.

Palmarejo

The city's most sought-after residential neighbourhood. Developed mainly since the 2000s, it combines modern buildings, planned streets and a seafront location, with a full range of shops, restaurants, schools and services. It's also the favourite area for the diaspora and expatriates, with the capital's highest resale and rental liquidity.

Achada Santo António

A central area, well served by shops and services, with a good mix of housing and business activity. It's a more affordable alternative to Palmarejo while staying close to the city centre.

The Plateau

Praia's historic centre, with colonial architecture and distinctive charm. It offers lower prices and appreciation potential through renovation, but requires extra care checking a property's condition.

Cidadela and Prainha

Quieter areas favoured by families and expatriates who value tranquillity without moving too far from the centre. They combine good access to services with a calmer pace of life.

How to choose?

If you're after modernity, sea proximity and investment potential, Palmarejo is usually the first choice. If price and centrality matter most, Achada Santo António is a solid alternative. For those who value history and don't mind investing in renovation, the Plateau is interesting. And for peace and quiet, Cidadela and Prainha strike that balance.
